Peter Heck recounts the difficult experience he had beating his head into a wall as he read Rachel Held Evansâ analysis on why âmillennialsâ are leaving the church. Evans wrongly suggests itâs the churchâs hostility towards liberal causes, though she does accurately state that young people arenât looking for mere changes in style. In short, she says the church should do more tamping down of the proclamation of the divisive nature of Biblical authority. She couldnât be more wrong. Luckily, the Gospel Coalitionâs Trevin Wax wrote a masterful response to the same issue in which he says the real answer to the youth exodus from church has everything to do with a need for more substance (truth). Peter reiterated this conclusion and shared Waxâs most powerful line: âI donât want a church that serves my preferences. I want a church that gives me Jesus and makes me want to serve His.â If the church adopted this approach, it wouldnât have to try so hard to attract young people...because it would be offering something far different than anything the world has to offer them.
